How to remove grit from baby spinach?

Gentle soaking and careful rinsing removes grit

Baby spinach often carries sand and soil that cling between leaves. Use a gentle, multi-step soak to release grit without bruising the tender leaves. Fill a large bowl with cold water, add the spinach, and swish gently. Let it rest for 1–2 minutes so sand settles to the bottom, then lift the leaves out.

Repeat this process 2–3 times with fresh water until sediment in the bowl is minimal. For very gritty batches, use a colander set over a bowl and pour water through while lightly agitating the leaves.

Tips for success:

  • Avoid aggressive rubbing which tears leaves.
  • Use a salad spinner to dry after rinsing — spinning helps shake loose trapped grit.
  • If you must chop without full rinsing (for convenience), rinse the leaves first and then pat dry so grit isn’t dragged into the cut surfaces.

Proper rinsing keeps baked goods, smoothies, and salads grit-free and improves mouthfeel and flavor.
