Effective washing to remove grit and insects
Spinach often harbors soil and tiny critters in crevices. A gentle but thorough rinse with an agitation step and an ice bath helps dislodge what’s hiding.
Washing method:
- Fill a large bowl with cold water. Submerge the leaves and swish them gently to loosen grit.
- Let the spinach sit so dirt settles to the bottom, then lift leaves out rather than pouring water and grit back over them.
- Repeat if water is very dirty, and finish with a quick rinse under running water for any stubborn particles.
- Dry in a salad spinner or pat gently with towels.
Tips:
- For very sandy spinach, multiple soaks may be necessary.
- Inspect folded leaves where dirt often hides.
- Washing right before use preserves texture; if you wash in advance, dry thoroughly to avoid mildew.
This routine ensures clean spinach that’s safe and pleasant to eat.
